the evolution of a design

Any person from the College of Architecture would tell you that you never use your first design as your final design. There has to be an evolution...that's where great ideas stem from! So let me introduce to you my latest evolution of a design: the rehearsal dinner invitation for my brother's wedding. I had picked out the two designs below a long, long time ago {sidenote: there may only be ONE thing that catches my attention on an inspiration image, but I nonetheless save it to it's respectable folder and wait until I need it again}.

Remember my post from before on wood? That's where I was wanting to go with these invitations. Then I found these neat cards at Michael's and I knew they were perfect. Let the printing process begin...

SIDENOTE: To get the spacing correct, I probably printed this thing 25+ times.

The green part is an envelope with a cutout in the middle where "please join us" shows through. So you pull out the actual invitation from inside the green card.

Attempt #1: This was just a quick attempt in Photoshop, where I didn't know what information actually needed to go on the invite, I knew my parents would hate the fonts, and I stole the tree and tree ring from other places. The main point of this one was to see if my parents would like the tree, enough for me to draw my own.

Attempt #2: changed fonts, messed with wording, still playing...

It just didn't make sense to have a tree ring sitting up on it's edge like that. So I x-nayed the tree ring and decided to make my own tree stump (much more believable?). I sketched the image above, scanned it in, and started playing in Photoshop...

Attempt #3: I could not for the life of me figure out what to put on the tree stump. Mom did NOT like having the J+T on the tree stump because it was on a dead tree then...once she said it, I knew I couldn't leave it there. We also got rid of "A rehearsal dinner"...changing it just to "rehearsal dinner."

Attempt #4: We shortened the wording (getting rid of "to honor the bride and groom-to-be), and then Mom decided that it needed MAPLE leaves falling to the ground (to be more realistic). And you all wonder where my perfectionism comes from.

Attempt #5: The actual invitation! Complete with maple leaves falling (they wanted their wedding in the fall), J+T on the tree that is still ALIVE, and Lydia happy with the end result.

This past weekend was Norman Public Schools fall break. We took the middle school and high school leadership teams at church on a retreat down to the big D. We left on Thursday, Oct. 21 and came back the following day. Lots of fun, fellowship, friends, and food. The timeline consisted of:

Have one circle of chairs with one half of the people sitting in the chairs. The other half need to pick a chair to stand behind. The object of the game is for the people in chairs to switch spots with someone else in another chair. However, they cannot say a word. The people in chairs have to make eye contact with another chair-goer, wink at each other, and quickly get out of their chair before the person behind them grabs their shoulders and makes them sit back down.

all of the BASIC (Brothers and Sisters Under Christ) and FISH (Followers in Service to Him) kiddos (the leadership teams for middle school and high school).

After getting to sleep in my own bed on Friday night, we arose before daybreak to head back south on i-35 for a day at Six Flags over Texas. A few weeks before (when I was in NYC), the youth attempted a day at Six Flags, but it ended up being rained out. A similar story unfolded on Saturday, Oct. 23, but most of the kids got to ride a few rides before having to call it a day due to lightening. Overall, it was a fun weekend, ending the whole thing with the Middle School and High School Hayride, a long-running tradition at McFarlin. That will get it's own post hopefully tomorow :) toodles!

Way-Back Wednesday: freshman choir tour

Be prepared. Be very prepared...for a new series of posts that will hopefully hold me somewhat accountable to a) blogging and b) providing a great source of comic relief. One of the many UFO's (Un-Finished Objects, a term from my mom and her quilting habits...) I have started in the past few months includes going through and organizing old pictures...which entail means SCANNING them. And let me tell you, the Frost's take a LOT of pictures, so this is by no means an easy endeavor. Anyone who knows me knows how important pictures are to me though, so why not create a post every week (okay we'll see how long that lasts...) about a past time, be it 2 years ago or 20 years ago. This week's post is dedicated to the:

McFarlin High School Choir Tour 2002 to Florida.

The charter bus: our home for 10 days as we traveled through the southern states.

Welcome to the world's worst beach: Biloxi, Mississippi. The water never got deep, no matter how far you went out, and it was BROWN. Straight up, no questions asked, brown. Karen, Swenson, and Anna.

Rosemary and I had a homestay in beautiful Destin. Our family took us to see the beach that morning before we got back on the bus, but we didn't get to swim :(

Meet Darren. To entertain us on the long bus ride, he provided some entertainment for the lucky people who sat behind him the whole time: Anna and myself. He created "puppet shows" as seen above :)

He also discovered that he could fit in the luggage rack above our heads. Oh the things you'll do on a charter bus...

a wedding post.

Meet Jacey and Jake. The newlyweds now. They had a wonderful wedding last weekend where friends gathered from near and far to come support them. They also invested in a photobooth. I HIGHLY recommend this for any event in which you can afford it. The pictures you obtain will be priceless. So without further ado, here are my copies of the pictures :)
