Happy Wedding Day, Beth and Nick!

Meet Beth and Nick.

I met Beth in one of the first Interior Design classes I took at OU.  We both sat up front if my memory serves me correct.  Beth has the sweetest personality and has a genuine caring for people that lets you know you matter.  After our first semester of Interior Design classes, we put our drawing boards across from each other that first studio class and the rest was history.

I'm not sure when I met Beth's boyfriend for the first time.  However, I will always remember the first time I went to his house (Kristen, Jenna, Hayley, and Beth should be dying laughing right now).  Moving on.  I learned that Beth was from Tulsa (as was Nick) and that they had been dating since sometime in high school.  The story of how they met is pretty cute--and I'm probably going to butcher it, but I'll give it a shot.  Nick loves film and video and sometime in high school, they were acting out a scene (maybe in Spanish class?).  The scene or skit or whatever it was called for a kiss--between Beth and Nick.  They barely knew each other, and their first kiss got to be in front of the whole class.  I guess sparks flew :)

Love this engagement pic of them (stolen from Facebook).

They both moved to Norman to attend OU.  And after college, they moved back to Tulsa.  After many years, Nick popped the question, and their wedding is today!  It's another sad reminder of the things I miss when I'm 5500 miles away, but I'm happy that I'll get to see all the pics through the wonderful world of social media.  Because I love digging up old pictures, I had fun scrounging for these :)  Most are from my personal folders but I had to take a few from Facebook.  Enjoy!

might be one of the first pics we took together--probably 2006?

My extra room...

Today, I decided to bite the bullet and put up my heavy winter coat, smartwool socks, winter snow boots, gloves, hats, heavy winter blanket, etc.  Now, it will be probably be freezing in a few days just because I did that, but I've never understood the idea {and excitement} that comes with putting up your winter gear.

I get it now.

I did laundry today too and washed my long undies and flannel sheets (thanks, Julia!) that will also be put away as soon as they're dry :)  And since I don't think I've ever shown y'all my extra bedroom/dining room/laundry room/closet, I thought I'd snap a few pics so you could see it in all its glory.  This room is located at the back of my apartment and I honestly don't use it very often.  When I first moved into this apartment, this room was filled with dirty, old, nasty junk.  After a few months of living here, my landlady cleaned it out and allowed me to use the room.  It's nice for hosting a big meal, storing my clothes/shoes, and drying laundry.  Other than that, it rarely gets used.

The view from the door

some of today's laundry drying...and my Christmas decorations in the window. I don't have anywhere else to put them!

my bookshelf--complete with Russian language books that I haven't opened since last June and the magazines I've collected over the past year.  I only let myself read a new one when I'm having a bad day or need a pick-me-up.

How I dry sheets :) hung over a chair, bench, and suitcase standing up.  The wood unit behind the sheet is my closet.  The entry to the room is on the right side of this pic.

Inside the wardrobe! The winter boots are now in bags in the bag and I haven't decided yet what I'll do with my sweaters.  This is the only hanging space I have in the apartment.

"Let's get some shoes..." :) the heels Mitchell brought over when he lugged an extra suitcase here and I have yet to wear them.  Sad day.

Scarf collection

The random assortment of hangers drives my OCD up the wall, but hangers are really expensive here for some reason.  So, gotta make do! :)

The left side of the wardrobe--sheets/pillowcase storage, random make-up bags, make-up, etc.

So, that's all!  I am supposed to a video for Peace Corps showing different people's apartments and living situations here in Ukraine.  Once I do it, I'll of course post it here.

Gotta end today's post with a double-birthday shout-out to Mr. Parker John Pilkington and Mr. Edward Clay Faison (or Edward Clue Faison, which is how it was announced at high school graduation).  I've known these boys since I moved to Oklahoma in 2001...and I only wish I had some of those pics here with me in Ukraine.  BUT, I did manage to scrounge up a few old ones.  Happy Birthday Parker and Clay!  You only turn a quarter of a century old once, so enjoy it!

My senior prom date--2005!  Clay doesn't normally smile like that.  He was tired of taking pictures.  However, this does capture the true essence of Clay :)

See, I wasn't kidding.  Lydia, Rose, Nan, Amy, and Clay...who was already done with Baccalaureate and out of his cap and gown!

Way-Back-Wednesday #22: Mexico Spring Break Trips, the College Years!

When I wrote the title of this blog post, it took me back to one of my favorite TV shows of all time: Saved by the Bell.  Because that show was so popular (I may or may not have arranged my after-school TV schedule to be able to watch 4 episodes of Saved by the Bell every day), they went on to make a "college years" season or two.  I always wanted to live in a dorm room like Kelly Kapowski.  ANYWHO, getting way off track here.

So, remember last Wednesday's post {here}.  Being in high school was great, but getting to be an 'adult' on the Mexico Mission Trip = even better.  Back in the day when we stayed at a church in Weslaco, the college kids ended up staying at a church down the street for spacing issues.  This meant that we were in charge of ourselves and could go to bed whenever we wanted :)  That church had a pretty courtyard that we would stay up and talk for hours outside in.  It also had 2 showers, which meant that we didn't have to go stand in line at the middle school for showers that smelled like sulfur.

I'll let the pictures do the talkin'.  Happy looking :)

The College Team (can't remember our official team name...)
Allen, Swenson, Bev, Lydia, Jeannette, Rebecca, Allison
Jared, Joey, Amy, Bert, Joe, Archie

Our team worked well together and laughed a LOT.  We had a 15 passenger van to drive, which Allen fearlessly steered with a van full of sleeping college students.  However, one day, we were facing a doozy of a wait at the border.  I believe we were stuck behind a lot of semi trucks which meant that we would be waiting a while {a couple hours}.  Bev, sitting shotty, was a little on the impatient side :) and highly encouraged Allen to go around the semis that had literally parked their trucks and were standing around outside of them.  When the hole opened up, Allen took it and our 15 passenger van went for a little off-roading adventure on the shoulder in Mexico.  It was hysterical and a memory I've never forgotten.  Our team was actually working together with another group at a church, adding a second story to the building.

That meant that we had to get a massive pile of cement blocks up to the second floor...which meant a massive assembly line was in order.

Bert always managed to look like he'd rolled around in the mud.  He's actually just a hard {and slightly messy} worker :)

Teenster and Lydster

A memory that brings me to laughter to this day :)
Our wheelbarrow had a hole in it, but since it was the only thing that we could mix stucco in, we had to make do.  We shoved some paper in the hole, but at some point it got dislodged.  Kelsey, quick-minded, stuck her finger in the hole to plug it up while Emma and I kept mixing.  But, because Kelsey was a bit of a jokester, we disregarded her talk about how much her finger really hurt.
Turns out her finger was stuck.   Sorry we didn't believe you Kels :)
